Can I give you one piece of feedback on your site?
Why Your Website’s First Words Matter More Than You Think
There’s a spot on your website where people disappear faster than anywhere else. It happens before they scroll, before they click, before they even know what you offer.
And yes, this matters all year. But in December, it matters even more.
People are rushed. They’re distracted. They’re scanning, not reading.
Here’s the part most small business owners never realize: people decide whether to stay or leave based on the very first words they see.
And for most websites, those first words don’t actually say anything.
You’ve seen these lines everywhere:
- “Hi, I’m ______.”
- “Empowerment and healing.”
- “Your digital growth partner.”
- “Helping you connect with your purpose to channel growth.”
They sound nice. They look polished. But honestly — do you know what any of them mean? Could you tell what the business does just from that?
Probably not.
And your customers can’t either.
Examples of Clear Website Headers
Now compare that to a header that’s actually clear.
A family photographer might say:
Family photos that feel real, not forced.
Sessions are calm and natural so your family relaxes and you end up with images that look like your life.
[ BOOK YOUR SESSION ]
A candle maker might say:
A busy home needs moments of calm.
Natural soy candles that make your space feel grounded the moment you light them.

A therapist might say:
You’re tired of feeling overwhelmed on the inside while holding everything together on the outside.
Therapy that releases that pressure so you feel steadier, clearer, and more grounded in daily life.

You read those once and you get it.
No guessing. No decoding.
Why Vague Headers Hurt Your Business
And I’ll be honest, I see vague headers even on marketing agency websites. Beautiful design. Trendy language. Everything looks impressive. But nothing tells you what they actually do or how they help.
And this is where so many small business owners get stuck.
You hire a designer or an agency because it feels like the right move.
It’s a big investment, and you make it hoping for clarity, more confidence, and more sales.
Then the sales don’t come.
And you look at your beautiful site and assume the problem must be you.
Your offer.
Your ability.
Your value.
It’s NOT.
Most designers know how to make a site look good – colours, fonts, layout. But they’ve never studied sales copy. They don’t know how to write words that make people stay, understand, and buy.
They build pretty.
Not profitable.
How to Fix Your Website Header
Here’s the part I want you to hear:
You can take the tips from these emails, my social posts, or my blog, and write a clearer website yourself. Even with simple design. Even without perfection. Clear beats beautiful every single time.
When someone lands on your site, their brain is doing a quick scan:
“Is this for me?”
If your header – the top of your site – doesn’t answer that fast, they leave.
Not because they didn’t want what you offer.
But because they didn’t understand it quickly enough.
Big brands get this.
Their headers are simple and direct.
They tell you what they sell, who it’s for, and what to do next.
Nothing extra.
Your site deserves that same clarity.
- A clear headline.
- A short sentence that makes it even clearer.
- One easy next step.
That’s it.
Next week, I’ll show you how to bring that same clarity into the rest of your page, because once people start scrolling, you want them to know exactly where to go.
For now, fix the top.
Make it clear.
Make it obvious.
Make it easy for someone to stay.
People keep driving when the road is clearly marked.
