This post really ticked me off
This type of post makes me mad because it pretends to be generous.
But it’s just another funnel strategy – a polished version of the same old bro marketing.
You watch a Reel.
Click on the profile and see they have 473,693 followers.
Clearly, they know what they’re talking about, so you watch another.
Now they’re in your feed every day.
And then you see the post: “If I had to start over, here’s exactly what I’d do…”
- Define your brand in one sentence
- Pick one content format to master
- Create a recurring series
- Post consistently 2–3x/week
- Remix your top posts
- Build community in the DMs, one convo at a time
Then they hit you with,
“Comment [WORD] and I’ll send you [THE SECRET TO WHAT YOU REALLY WANT]”
And in that moment, it feels like you’re getting an inside tip.
Like maybe this is what you’ve been missing.
It’s this type of post that pisses me off.
Because I’ve been there.
I’ve opted in. I’ve bought the thing. I did the work.
And nothing changed.
So I assumed I was the problem.
But here’s what really happened:
You got pulled into their funnel.
They made you feel understood.
And they presented you with an offer you wanted.
And don’t get this wrong – I don’t have a problem with selling.
If you’ve got something I need or want, sell it to me. Take my money.
It’s never been the selling that’s the problem.
It’s the fact that they sell you clarity, but profit from your confusion.
That big account can’t really tell you whether the tactics they recommended would work today. They built their account over years and, since then the algorithm has changed. The way people use social media has changed. And let’s face it, seeing an account with a large following gives credibility.
But what I would tell you if I had to start over again is this:
Get to know your people.
Your followers are people. Don’t forget that.
If you have 20 followers, that is 20 people.
If they were all standing in front of you, that would be a lot.
One engaged person is a lot.
Talk to them. Pay attention to what they’re saying (and not saying). Notice what they’re struggling with.
Understand what you’re really offering.
Not just your product or service. What it actually does for someone.
Create a plan that takes your audience from:
“Who is this?” (content that gets their attention) to
“She gets me.” (get them to opt in so you can nurture them and build a relationship) to
“I want this.” (present them with an offer they want)
Create a strategy that fits your business, your people, and your offer.
Not someone else’s formula.
Not what worked for a different audience in a different season.
What would make sense for you, right now?
